What Is Skin Cancer? What Are Its Main Types?

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer which can occur in people. It is the abnormal growth of cells of the skin. It is mostly caused by too much exposure to the sun or other external and internal factors. Here are the 3 main types of skin cancers.

1. Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that can be evident by the formation of basal cells on the skin. If you don’t know what basal cells are, they are regenerative cells, which keep on forming on the skin, and the old ones dry off overtime before the new ones emerge.

Basal cell carcinoma is usually caused by overexposure to ultraviolet rays. They are red bumps with scabs all over your skin which is exposed to the sun. They can be red and bumpy, and they are formed usually on the head and neck.

2. Melanoma

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that is caused by hyperpigmentation of moles and spots on the skin. They are patchy and dark in color and they can occur on the external skin, in your mouth, and even in the eyes. The main cause of this skin cancer is UV light and a low amount of melanin in your skin. Melanin is a pigment-forming chemical in your skin, which gives your skin the characteristic color. It can also be genetic and familial.

It is usually diagnosed by a biopsy and the main area of concern are oncology and dermatology.

The treatment is usually through surgery where the melanoma is removed externally along with some parts of the skin. The prognosis is great until cancer spreads throughout the lymph nodes, which can cause a greater chance of metastasis or growth.

3. Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Our bodies have a lot of squamous cells, in the mouth, under the shoulders, in the genital regions, wherever there is the excretion of some sort, there are squamous cells. Squamous cell carcinoma is a very dangerous type of cancer, in which there is an abnormal growth in the squamous cells. It should be detected quickly because if it is left untreated, it can spread far and wide in the body and it can lead to major consequences.

The early symptoms of squamous cell carcinoma usually include colored patches around your skin. These patches, when tested for biopsy, will show signs of squamous cell carcinoma.

It can be treated via surgery and then a follow-up with chemotherapy usually does the trick. The metastasis of this cancer is high as compared to other skin cancers, so a lot of care has to be taken in order to prevent it in the future.

There you have it! Skin cancer is the most common as well as the most dangerous type of cancer since 70% of your body consists of skin, which is why the targeted areas are a lot more.
