What Is Group Therapy? What Does It Feel Like To Be In A Group Therapy?

If individual therapy is too intimidating for you, then you can try to enroll yourself in group therapy. To find out exactly what group therapy is and how it feels like to be in one, keep on reading.

Group Therapy

Group therapy, as the name suggests, is a type of mental therapy or psychotherapy, where there is a group of 8 to 10 people with one psychologist. The group usually deals with the same issues or mental health problems and the psychologist or therapist goes around each person and lets them have a heart to heart with everyone in the group. It is a great way to interact with other people while listening to how people feel about certain things and it’s a great platform to share your problems and thoughts.

What To Expect In A Group Therapy?

Here is what you can expect to be in group therapy.

1. Everyone Has Their Turns

Since there are 8 to 20 people in a group dealing with more or less the same mental health issues, each person has their say, which lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. It starts with a brief introduction of the person, what they deal with, and their thoughts. Every person goes around saying and expressing their thoughts and people can also help each other out, by making conversations and asking questions.

2. You Can Make Friends

Group therapy is not only a great way to have a platform to share your thoughts and problems, but it is also a great way to interact with people and make friends. Who knows, maybe you can find your best friend in that group.

3. You Don’t Feel Alone

Unlike individual therapy, where you feel alone and feel as though no one can relate to you, group therapy brings you close to other people. It gives you a sense of belonging and that you are not the only person who feels a certain way about some situations you will be surprised at how many similar people you will find in your group therapy sessions. It’s a great sense of being able to relate with other people.

4. It’s A Close Community

Group therapy is a close-knit community, where everyone deals with their own issues. It gives you a feeling that you belong here and you don’t feel foreign or weird around these people. The group usually knows what you’re going through and these people are there for you when you feel like you are at your weakest, most vulnerable self. As a community looks out for its people, a therapy group looks out for each other, so you don’t feel lonely.

There you have it! Group therapy is not only a great group activity, but it can enable you to open up more in front of other people. It does not make you feel alone at all, which is great.
